We were doing AEO
before it had a name.
Search stopped being a list of links. It became an answer — assembled by a model, delivered once, sourced from whoever earned the citation. Range has spent years teaching machines to read our clients' businesses correctly. Not as an experiment. As the product.
700 active client campaigns · 7 markets · in-house tooling, not licensed
"Find a licensed HVAC company near Grand Rapids that does emergency weekend service and takes financing — book the earliest slot."
The agent never showed a results page. There was no page two to lose on.
SEO didn't die.
It grew a second head.
Ten links became one paragraph. Then one paragraph became one action taken on the customer's behalf. Every layer still runs on the same fuel — structured, credible, machine-legible information about your business — but the reward curve got brutally steep. Being fourth used to mean fewer clicks. Now it means invisible.
The ranked list
Ten blue links, a map pack, and a click to earn. Still the largest source of qualified traffic for local business — and still where we win first.
The generated answer
AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot. Three citations, not ten. The question is no longer "where do we rank" but "are we the source."
The agent that acts
Agentic inquiries are long, conditional, and specific. They don't browse. If your answer isn't structured, you aren't in the shortlist — and nobody tells you why.
How we build a business
an AI can recommend.
Five stages, applied to every account. Nothing here is a bolt-on retainer line item — it's how a Range campaign is assembled from day one.
Entity foundation
Before a model can cite you, it has to be certain who you are. We reconcile name, service area, licensing, hours, and offer language across every surface a model reads — site, listings, reviews, third-party directories — until there is exactly one version of your business in the world's index.
Answer-shaped content
We write to the question, not the keyword. Direct answer first, evidence underneath, scope and caveats stated plainly, marked up so a model can lift it without guessing. It reads better for humans too — that's the part competitors keep missing.
Catalog & SKU optimization
Ecommerce lives or dies at the product level, and no human team writes 20,000 descriptions. Ours don't — our software does, with attributes, effects, formats, and comparison language a shopping agent can actually filter on. This is the work we've been doing with AI longest.
Citation-surface monitoring
We watch the answer layer the way agencies used to watch rank: which questions surface you, which surface a competitor, and where a model is stating something about you that is out of date or flatly wrong. Then we fix the source, not the symptom.
Global rollout on algorithm change
This is the one nobody can copy. When we detect a change in how results or answers are being assembled, we don't queue 700 tickets. We push the correction across every applicable campaign at once — then hand the recovered analyst hours back to the custom work your account actually needs.
Our AI works on us
so the savings land on you.
Most agencies bought an AI subscription last year and raised their rates. We built the tooling in-house and did the opposite. When one system can carry the repeatable 80% of optimization across 700 campaigns, the math changes in a way you can see on an invoice.
Illustrative of process, not a client-specific benchmark. The point holds either way: the market moves faster than a queue can.
The AI Receptionist.
Answer engine, on your line.
AEO earns the inquiry. Something still has to answer it. Range puts an AI agent on your phone line and your website that picks up instantly, day or night — it knows your services, your coverage area, and your FAQs, qualifies the caller, and hands off to a human the moment it matters.
Same discipline as the rest of the campaign: if a machine can state your business correctly, it can also sell it correctly.
Questions, answered
the way we'd answer yours.
Direct answer first, detail second, no hedging. This section exists to be quoted by a model — which is exactly what we build for our clients.
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the practice of making a business the source an AI system cites when it answers a question. Where SEO competes for a position on a results page, AEO competes to be the information inside a generated answer — which requires verified entity data, question-shaped content, and structured markup a model can lift without ambiguity.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines are largely built on the same crawled, indexed, credibility-weighted web that organic search uses. Strong SEO is the precondition for AEO, not an alternative to it. Range runs both as one campaign for that reason.
What is agentic targeting?
Optimizing for AI agents that don't just answer but act — comparing providers, filtering on conditions like licensing, financing, or weekend availability, and completing a booking or purchase. These queries are long and conditional, so the winning business is the one whose terms are machine-readable rather than buried in prose, images, or a PDF.
How is Range different from an agency that just added AI?
Our tooling is proprietary and predates the current wave. We use it to optimize product catalogs at a scale human teams can't reach, and to apply optimization changes across all 700 client campaigns the same day we detect an algorithm shift. Other agencies can subscribe to a model; they can't subscribe to our systems.
Does using AI mean the work is cheaper for me, or just for you?
For you. The efficiency our software creates is passed on as lower pricing, and website design and development are absorbed into the campaign rather than billed as a separate capital project. Our analysts spend the recovered hours on the custom strategy each account needs.
How do you measure AEO if there's no ranking?
By citation share and answer accuracy: which questions surface you as a source across AI search surfaces, how often a competitor is named instead, whether models state your services, hours, and terms correctly, and what those surfaces contribute in calls, chats, and booked jobs.
Find out what an AI
currently says about you.
We'll run your business through the answer surfaces your customers are already using, show you where you're cited, where a competitor is cited instead, and what a model is getting wrong. Then we'll tell you plainly whether we can fix it.
