Five Essential Marketing Tasks for New Businesses

Spend half an hour on each of these tasks to get a head start on your marketing!

Opening a new business is always stressful and often feels like you’re climbing a mountain that gets steeper every time you try to pick up your pace. Sometimes new entrepreneurs wait until everything else is in place to begin their marketing, but that can be a mistake. When you finally get your new location up-and-running, there needs to be at least a small amount of marketing in place to support it. We’ve put together a list of five essential tasks you can complete in only a few minutes apiece to get a jumpstart on your marketing efforts.

#1 Spend ten bucks on a domain name

If you haven’t purchased it already, owning YourBusinessName.com (or something close to that) is really important. We recommend using Google Domains, but any registrar will work! The key component is that you register your name before someone else snatches it up.

Tip: Be sure to enable “auto renewal” on your new domain. You’re going to be just as busy a year from now and you don’t want an expiring .com to shut down your website.

#2 Lock down your social media handles

Just like a domain name, if someone else claims your preferred social media handle, you’re out of luck. New companies and consumers are creating accounts every day. Waiting until next week might be the difference between claiming @YourBusinessName and something much less memorable.

Tip: Get started with an Instagram profile and a Facebook business page, then worry about the rest later.

#3 Setup a Google Business Profile

As soon as your location can receive mail and there is at least a “coming soon” sign out front, it’s time to sign up for a free Google listing. The verification process includes Google sending a postcard to your business address, which can take a little time.

Tip: Before your listing can go live, Google will ask you to provide the PIN printed on their postcard.

#4 Get working on a great logo

If you haven’t gotten one already, a sharp logo can be a unifying force that gets carried through the store design, marketing materials, social channels, and website. Pick a good one because you’ll be married to it for a long time! The best logos look good on a variety of background colors and immediately tell the customer what type of business you are starting.

#5 Keep the world informed with a simple landing page

You probably aren’t ready to build out a full website, but it is important to provide something at your .com for excited future customers. Even a simple one-pager can help get the buzz started and make your grand opening a big success. Most website hosting providers provide a cheap template option, but ideally you should start working with a web designer who will later develop a full website for you.
